International co-operation has been always treated as an important activity at Jagiellonian University. Its role has been changing over the years. It would be difficult to overestimate the contribution of international scientific collaboration to the quality of research and teaching during the times when our contacts with the international scientific community were limited due to political and economical reasons. This last decade has brought major changes to Poland and as a result, many new areas of international relations have been opened.
We are still
deeply involved in the traditional and very fruitful co-operation with
our long-term partners and friends from many distinguished universities
all over the world. We are also involved in a wide range of new projects
and initiatives. It would be difficult to characterise all of them. I would
just like to mention the international programs such as TEMPUS and SOCRATES
which create unique opportunity for exchange not only for the members and
staff, but also students.
By September
1, 1999 the new authorities of Jagiellonian University, elected last Spring,
resumed their duties for the next three years (see their individuals profiles
below). This period of time is expected to be especially interesting and
challenging for the whole community of Jagiellonian University. The year
2000 is a very special year for us. It is the year of the 600th
anniversary of the refunding of the University (Kraków Academy).
The celebrations of the Jubilee started on the May 12, 1999 and will end
on May 12, 2001. We would like to use this occasion not only for the presentation
of our achievements but also for improving our teaching and research facilities.
One of the most important projects is the construction of the new campus,
the Third Campus of the JU. This is really a difficult task, but essential
for further development of the University.
During the year 2000 there will be a number of scientific congresses, conferences, meetings, workshops, special courses, exhibitions, festivals, graduate reunions, galas and visits. We would like to encourage the entire community of our University and the citizens of our city to participate in these activities. The participation of our friends, collaborators and partners, working and living all over the world will be also most welcomed. Please join us in celebrating our Jubilee and to build a great future.
